Most of the images in this collection are photographs of the reconstruction of the Vance house which took place between 1958-1961. Some of the images have been lightly edited for clarity. This collection also includes images sourced from manuscripts and newspapers prior to or within the same time period.

Pouring the New Foundation
A local company prepares to pour cement into what will be the foundation of the reconstructed Vance house. The original fireplace is pictured to the right.

Daubing the Back of the House
Two workers daub between logs of the reconstructed Vance family home. The two story section of the house to the left has been daubed already.

Two Workers Shaping Logs
The man on the left is using a broad axe to shape a log. The man on the right is using a draw knife to shape a log. The logs were shaped before they were put together on site to form the reconstructed Vance house.

Three Workers Treating Logs
Three men work on site to treat the logs which would be used for the reconstructed Vance house. The logs were treated with weather-proofing chemicals that added longevity.

Digging the Foundation
A man sits atop a tractor while another man to the left oversees the work. The men are digging what will be the foundation of the reconstructed Vance house. The original fireplace is present in the background of the image.

Preparing Logs for Transport
Men guide a crane which is lifting a sawed log onto a flatbed truck. The logs will then be transported to the site where they will be used in the reconstruction of the Vance house.
